The short answer

Conservatory cost in 2026 is roughly between €1,500 and €3,000 per square metre, including foundations, glazing, fitting and VAT. For a 12 m² conservatory you therefore often end up between €18,000 and €36,000. A conservatory is an insulated glazed extension of the living room that you use all year round. That puts the price closer to an extension than to a veranda. These are market indications. What your conservatory costs belongs in a tailored quote.

Why is conservatory cost higher than for a veranda?

A conservatory is a full part of the house. It stands on foundations with an insulated floor, has walls of insulated glazing and an insulated or glass roof, and is often heated. A veranda is a canopy on pad foundations without insulation. You see that difference in construction straight back in the price. What a veranda costs is explained in veranda cost.

  • Foundations and insulated floor, often with underfloor heating
  • Walls and roof of insulated glazing, or a solid roof
  • Opening or glazed doors to the existing house
  • Ventilation and sun shading against overheating

Which choices determine the price of a conservatory?

The roof makes a big difference. A fully glazed roof gives lots of light but needs solar control glass or shading, because a south-facing conservatory otherwise gets too hot in summer. A solid, insulated roof with one or more roof lanterns keeps the temperature more stable. The profiles also count, uPVC or timber, as does the way the conservatory connects to the house.

If the existing rear wall has to be opened up, a steel beam and new glazed doors are added. That work is similar to fitting a sliding door.

Do you need a permit for a conservatory?

A conservatory at the rear falls under the same rules as an extension. In the rear garden area and within the permitted dimensions it is often permit-free, but that depends on the location, the height and your municipality's environmental plan. Check via the Omgevingsloket before you order. How an application works is explained in permits for a renovation. If you wish, we take care of the drawings and the permit.

Conservatory or extension: which suits you better?

If you mainly want light and contact with the garden, a conservatory is a good fit. If you are looking for a space that is equally comfortable in every season, a brick extension with large glazed doors is often the calmer choice. The price difference per m² is smaller than many people think. For the insulation requirements, read insulating an extension.

We build conservatories and verandas in uPVC and traditional styles and are happy to discuss the options in a no-obligation conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a conservatory all year round?

Yes, if it is well insulated and heated, for example with underfloor heating. Pay particular attention to summer: without solar control glass, shading and ventilation, a south-facing conservatory quickly gets too hot.

What does a small 9 m² conservatory cost?

Roughly allow €15,000 to €27,000 including VAT for an insulated 9 m² conservatory with foundations and glazing. Small conservatories are relatively expensive per m², because fixed items such as the foundations and the connection to the house remain.

Does a conservatory increase the value of my home?

A well-built, insulated conservatory adds living space and can therefore contribute to the value. A poorly insulated glass room often counts for less in a valuation. The quality of construction and insulation therefore makes a difference.
