In a home in Amsterdam we built a bulkhead with a projector screen. A bulkhead is a boxed-in section along the ceiling or wall. This one was given a screen for the projector and was plastered after the carpentry, so it forms one whole with the room. Below you can read how a job like this usually runs and what to look out for.
A projector screen hanging loose on the wall or ceiling stands out, even when you are not using it. A bulkhead offers a solution: the screen gets a fixed place in a boxed-in casing. A bulkhead like this can also hide pipes or cables at the same time. Read more about the options under building a bulkhead.
Our approach to the bulkhead with projector screen
With a bulkhead like this, a timber or metal stud frame usually comes first, sized to the screen. The frame is then boarded and the plastering follows. It is important that the screen works properly and that connections remain accessible. We count jobs like this as remodelling, because carpentry and finishing come together.
Bulkhead including a screen for the projector
Carpentry made to measure for the room
Neatly plastered after the carpentry
One point of contact from start to finish
The result: a calm ceiling
After plastering, the bulkhead forms one whole with the room. A bulkhead usually gives a calmer look, because the screen has a fixed place instead of hanging loose. A bulkhead is often part of a larger refurbishment, for example when renovating a home. Live in the capital? Then also read our page on our work as a builder in Amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about extensions, alterations, permits and planning.
What does building a bulkhead cost?
That depends on the length, the finish and what needs to go inside the bulkhead. A simple bulkhead is less work than one with a screen or lighting. If the bulkhead is part of a larger job, see what a remodelling costs. We are happy to prepare a tailored quote.
Can a bulkhead also hide pipes?
Yes, that is one of the most common reasons for a bulkhead. Think of drainage pipes, ventilation ducts or cables. Do keep an inspection hatch free if pipes need to remain accessible.
Is a bulkhead always plastered?
Not always, but for a smooth finish plastering is often the best option. In this project in Amsterdam the bulkhead was plastered after the carpentry. It can then be painted the same colour as the ceiling.
