On a flat roof in the centre of Amsterdam we created a roof terrace with a roof extension. A timber roof extension went up, with timber cladding and a frame with a door, and next to it a timber deck as the terrace. Before the work started it was a bare gravel roof. Below you can see the steps a project like this goes through, from the old roofing to the finished terrace.
Space is scarce in the city. A flat roof covered only in gravel is often the largest unused part of a home. With a roof extension and roof terrace, that roof becomes a place to sit outside, with a sheltered room next to it.
A roof extension on a flat roof usually requires an environmental permit (omgevingsvergunning), certainly in a city like Amsterdam. Read more under the permit for a roof extension.
The photos show the process clearly. First the bare gravel roof, then the removal of the old roofing. Next the timber frame of the roof extension went up, which was given timber cladding and a frame with a door. Finally the timber deck was laid. On a roof like this we usually check beforehand whether the existing structure can carry the extra weight and how rainwater will drain away.

Usually not without checking first. A roof terrace, and certainly a roof extension, may require a permit, for example because of overlooking the neighbours, the height and the environmental plan. Always check with the municipality or through the Omgevingsloket before you start.
