This project was about replacing a frame and fascia boards on a house with a thatched roof and a large glass facade. The owner wanted the existing aluminium frame replaced by a new frame with two French doors in the middle. The fascia boards also needed renewing. A large glass facade lets in plenty of light, but a fixed frame leaves little room to step outside. With two French doors in the middle, the facade becomes a way through to the garden. At the same time it was time for new fascia boards: the boards along the roof edge that shield the roof structure from wind and weather. When replacing a frame in a glass facade, the work usually starts with measuring, followed by removing the old frame and fitting, connecting and sealing the new one. The roof edge of a thatched roof needs extra care, because the thatch runs close to the edge and must not be damaged. The old fascia boards come off, the substrate is checked and the new boards are fixed and finished. Read more about replacing fascia boards.
The house keeps its large glass facade, but now has a way out to the garden. The new fascia boards make the roof edge neat again and protect the structure behind them. Often when the paint keeps peeling, the wood feels soft or wood rot is visible. Do not wait too long, because moisture can spread into the roof structure. You will find an indication of the costs under the cost of replacing fascia boards.
In many cases, yes. The opening must be suitable and a good sill with drainage is needed. We assess this on site, and if the appearance of the facade changes significantly, check with the municipality whether a permit is required.
